“Special, especial, particular, specific 和 peculiar” 这五个单词都是形容词，似乎都含有“专门、特别”的意思。不过细细推敲，它们所表达的意思有各自不同的侧重点，用法也有区别。

现在我们依次来看 Florrie 提出的五个单词：第一个 special，是形容词，指不同于一般、与众不同，着重事物的专门性，突出与一般不同。听例句：

The president will take his own special plane to Washington.
总统将乘专机飞往华盛顿。这里的 special plane 表示专机专门用来让总统使用的飞机。
They make a perfect couple. They are very special to each other.
他们俩是天生的一对，相互特别，无可取代。这里 special to each other 指感情上互为钟爱，都感觉对方特别的不能取代。

第二个词，especial 也表示“特殊的”，形容词，不过在日常会话里很少以形容词的形式出现，大家看到和听到的基本上都是 especially 副词，表示特别，格外，尤其。请听例句：

I love going to England, especially in the summer.
我喜欢去英格兰，尤其是在夏天。
This ring was made especially for his wife.
这个戒指是专为他妻子制造的。
A: Do you like seafood? 你喜欢吃海鲜吗？
B: Not especially。不是特别地喜欢。

以上几个句子里的 especially 都是副词，分别表示“尤其”、“专门”、“特别”。现在我来小结以下：specially 多指为一特别目的而做。比如：“I came specially to see you. 我特地来看你” ；而 especially 侧重在格外或达到某种异常的程度。比如：“The Weather has been especially cold. 最近天气特别冷。” 。
下面看第三个词 particular 也是形容词，它的第一个含义是“值得注意的；特别的；不寻常的”。请看例句：

There is nothing in the letter that is of particular importance.
这封信里没什么特别重要的内容。It's of no particular importance 就是说“某物不具备特别重要性”。
We'd better not waste time on such problems of no particular value.
我们最好不要在这些没有特别价值的问题上浪费时间啦。

我们来看最后一个单词 peculiar，它的第一个常用意思是“特有的；独具的”。看例句：

This is an expression peculiar to the local people and it can't be understood by non-locals.
这是个当地的特殊表达，外地人不懂。这里 peculiar 的意思是“独有的”。
Each person's fingerprints are peculiar to himself.
指纹是每个人特有的。
